Poem: My New Year Wishes From Sports

Another year passes, mixed with joy and sorrow,

Boxing Day Tests coming on the morrow,

India teams surpassed previous odds,

Never mind WWC, CT final records,

Tho’ Réal proved UCL can be retained,

La Liga and EPL races look preordained.

Sobering Clasico, Numbing Derby fights,

Will United ever get back to Fergie heights?

Will Virat be Old Blighty’s blaster?

Will Ash prove, even away, that he’s the master?

Will Sindhu break her finals hoodoo?

Will nontraditional sports have some typical Indian voodoo?

As a new year peeks out,

I wish for my teams some on-field clout.

Indian Major finalists, either of the sexes,

Réal R16 win vs PSG wouldn’t be an excess,

Tours to SA, England n Aussies,

May Indian lambs turn lions overseas,

May Desi shuttlers win golds at Worlds n All-England,

May Brazil do a sixth Finals merry band,

May ManU win EPL on goal difference,

None of these in any order of preference.

Above all,

What I want,

This coming year,

Is sportsmanship, competition, thrill and exertion,

Exemplary conducts, no acrimony and lots of gumption.

Fulfilment of these would go psyche-deep,

Fans like me would have nights of contented sleep.
